The puzzle mechanics are unique, and although there are 100 levels, the first 20 or so are basically tutorial levels. On top of that, the game has a level editor so that players can create their own puzzles and share them with each other. With this foundation, you will definitely get bored of the game long before you ever solve all of the puzzles out there. The game also does a good job of adhering to it's organic chemistry theme, both visually and fundamentally. Additionally, the game draws very little wattage and can be played with just a mouse, making it good for study breaks and play on laptops without charging. I've actually put in most of my play time on the road rather than in my living room. This all sounds good, but the greatest criticism I can give the game is that the puzzles generally aren't fun. They are unique and plentiful, but this isn't enough to make them fun (at least for me). Ultimately they fail to deliver the "ah-ha" moments that define the puzzle genre because the puzzles - even the most challenging ones - never succeed in challenging the player's perspective. Solving puzzles is a matter of bookkeeping and mental RAM. The developer's approach to increasing the difficulty of puzzles is to just add more steps and more components to the puzzle. The hardest puzzles I have come across are cluster♥♥♥♥s on my screen and it takes several minutes of staring just to recognize all of the components involved. When I finally solved some of the hardest puzzles in the game, it wasn't because I finally stumbled across the crux of the puzzle or had some epiphany of how to approach the problem, but rather it was just a matter of finally finishing the mental processing all of the steps that were required to do. There are a few rare gems that break this mold, like the level "BalanceMix" in "ConstructConfuse". Unfortunately, after much playing, they seem few and far between. For this reason, Tricone Lab feels more like a sudoku book or daily crossword puzzle, which is fine. If you are the kind of person that enjoys these kinds of puzzles (and I know there are many who do, which is great!), then I highly recommend Tricone Lab. For me however, the experience of playing the game comes across as mundane and I wouldn't say I got $10 worth out of the game. The only reason I even played so far into the game was because I was gifted a key and wanted to make sure I experienced basically the entire product before committing myself to this judgment.. Though got a crash in first minute, the game works fine set to native res.A new approach to puzzles is really freshening. Fine interface for what is aimed, good atmosphre with the animation and music. No-brainer to get at discount if you generally like puzzles.. Disclaimer: I was given a key by the developer due to my having enjoyed other, similar games, which was a first for me, and was pretty cool. :) No request was made in exchange for this key other than general beta-level feedback. This review is simply because I genuinely enjoyed the game.Tricone Lab is a 2D puzzle game where you seek to create a certain number of "tricones" by joining three individually cones into a catalyst. A variety of obstacles may be in your way, whether barriers, other catalyzers which will steal the cones, or needing to transport/clone/etc various tools in order to establish the final set of cones necessary in the proper location. A few of the levels are quite difficult, but there's an excellent series of tutorial levels which ramp the difficulty in a way that allows you to explore each newly-introduced mechanic. The game is still in early access, and there's a few known bugs on the forum which are getting ironed out, but none of the ones which I ran into are gamebreaking or mess with the experience whatsoever - typically a graphical glitch, or the like, which can be solved by reloading the level. The game has a complete set of authoring tools, allowing users to create their own levels which can be shared via the Tricone Labs website. All in all, it took me roughly 5 hours to complete all the levels that came with the game, and it left me wanting more - I'm actually trying my hand at making a level or two right now, which is something I practically never do, and as I got the game for free, I bought an extra copy to gift to a friend, which is some of the highest praise I can offer. If you enjoy puzzle games, this is likely right up your alley.. This is a fantastic puzzle game - it feels like it uses a similar part of my brain that Sudoko does (if this then that, but if I do that then this happens so I need to stop that happening by doing this but then I can't do that so must do this, and so on). It's a great example of a few rules and conditions that multiply together to something really complex. I've been playing for 6 hours or so, unlocked 33% of the achievements, so still have a lot of playing to go. Pretty good value for £6.99.I am getting to the levels where you can draw new membrane walls to make partitions and protect/isolate some of the pieces you're playing with, and each time you get a new type of 'piece' to play with it gives it more depth. The game also introduces you to the mechanism of play very well - it doesn't teach you what to do, so much as put you in the right environments to learn what to do, before it throws the harder problems at you.I'm also playing on a touchscreen, which makes the whole thing quite tactile. So if you're into thinking and problem solving, give it a try - if you get past four or five levels you'll be hooked into finishing it - while it gets more difficult as it goes on, it's always possible to solve. :). I was supplied with this key by the developer, this however did not affect the review. All of my developer sponsored reviews are positive because I pick the good ones═══════════════════════════════════OVERVIEWThis is basically a puzzle/logic game where you drag elements around inside a "cell" to build tricone, an element that requires you to combine 3 different colored cones (red, green, blue) onto a catalyst. Many interesting mechanics in this game (break a cell wall to neutralize a negative charge in order to build tricone, or build up a negative charge inside the cell to break apart a tricone in order to clone its components, required when the level requires you to build several tricones). Strategy comes into play in later levels as you may have to use different tools provided to beat the level. For example, you may have to break down the walls of a cell in a certain order, to neutralize the cell, etc.═══════════════════════════════════PROS & CONSPros:Mix of easy and challenging levelsAbility to design/share levels (coming soon)Interesting concept of a game (mixing biology and puzzle solving)Cons:Sometimes requires a lot of trial and error to beat levelsNot too much content currently═══════════════════════════════════SUMMARY & FINAL RATINGSolid and novel take on the puzzle genre. Some levels may make you rage, be warned!═══════════════════════════════════For more recommendations on quality indie games or ones with high potential follow our group reviews here. Drag various pieces to various locations for various effects and ultimately construct your tricones. At first you wonder how much of a puzzle game it can really be, but as the mechanics build up and cell structure gets more complicated it can get really tricky by the later levels. It does need Java to play which is irritating, and whenever I loaded it it always said it couldnt connect to server so I dont appear to have access to any additional content, but I rarely spend much time looking at user edited content, and the game has plenty of levels built in for the money you pay.Ultimately its a a really quite unique, challenging, puzzle game with decent enough sound and graphics to get across the satisfying game play. A seemingly underappreciated gem amongst the budget puzzlers.. Tricone Lab is an interesting little puzzle game. I had fun with the game but it is not going to be for everyone. At first I found the game to be kind of boring. As I continued playing the game and new mechanics were added, the game really started picking up. While I have only played the game for around three hours and have only completed some of the game, the game really started to grow on me. The puzzles are really well designed and really make you think outside the box. Difficulty wise I would say that the game is moderately difficult with a couple of the puzzles being pretty challenging that require you to really think outside the box in order to solve them. Probably the game's greatest weakness at this point is the visuals/presentation. Graphics don't really matter that much in puzzle games but I think the graphics and presentation could use a little polish. The true longevity of the game will come down to the community. If the game creates a strong community that makes a lot of levels the game could flourish. If not I am guessing you could get around seven to ten hours out of the puzzles included with the game. If you don't like abstract puzzle games, Tricone Lab will probably not be for you. If you like puzzle games though and after watching the trailer you think the game looks interesting I think you will enjoy the game. Note: I received a free review copy from the developer but received no other compensation for this review. Read My Full Review [www.geekyhobbies.com]. just an aweosome puzzle game, minimalist and beautiful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Phn66tIvDGEThis game gets pretty difficult really fast, or maybe it's because I'm extremely dumb. I was whizzing through the levels easily until I came upon this one level which I was stuck on and to this day have still not passed it. The puzzles in this game are really unique but easy to understand, not so easy to work out though. My only major concern of this game is the price. £8.99 seems way too steep, I feel £4-5 would be a more fairer price.Positives:+ Unique logical puzzles+ Simple to learn but hard to master+ Level editors making you able to create your own puzzlesNegatives- Once you are stumped and stuck it's very hard to progress (well I couldnt at all) - Though there claims to be a skip feature but I could not find it- Very steep priceI would recommend it to extreme puzzle geeks and people who don't mind paying a bit more for a game which feels like it should be less. I feel the content may possibly make up for the price but I cannot comment on that as I got stuck. The editor is a really cool feature though. I would avoid it to numbskulls like me and people who are prone to frustration. My overall score is:A good and mind boggling game but wait for a sale
