About This Game World-famous red-haired adventurer Adol Christin awakens in the unfamiliar land of Celceta, remembering nothing more than his own name. Bereft of his past, Adol explores the town he happened to wander into, searching for any clues at all to his identity. Joined by a thief who claims to have spent some time at his side these past weeks, the young adventurer helps rescue doomed miners from a collapse – an act which ingratiates him to the local Romun Army general. Impressed with their skills, the pair is enlisted to explore the Great Forest of Celceta and map its vast expanses – a task which many have attempted in the past, but from which none have ever returned alive.Eager to unravel the mystery of his past and the cause of his predicament, Adol sets off with his new-old thief friend, Duren, to chart the untamed wilderness that claimed his memories. Along the way he meets numerous other individuals who seem to have encountered him before, and must carefully determine who among them can be trusted.Developer Nihon Falcom originally revisited the land and characters of Japanese cult favorite Ys IV in 2012 with Ys: Memories of Celceta on the PlayStation Vita, and the game found its way to North America the following year. The graphics are crisp, the sound is fantastic, the music is one of my favorite Ys soundtracks in the series. They really tightened up the party system in this game, where you switch between all the characters that you want to play. You can tell a lot of effort went into making the system and gameplay more fun than in Ys SEVEN, which was the last game in the series, but the first that used this system. Overall, I give this game a 9/10.. For the record, I own all the Ys games available on Steam, & have beaten all of them, some titles several times over. I also beat this on PS Vita. Literally today, I just got a new gaming laptop (MSI GS65VR) that I am still setting up, so believe it or not, I am playing with GPD Pocket with Atom Z8750 + 8GB RAM :) And yes, it's fully playable - my setting is 800x600 with everything set to low, but on GPD 7in screen, it still looks good. I am mentioning this because like all Ys games released by XSEED (of course not including Ys VIII by NISA, cough, cough), it is very well optimized. So those who are holding purchases because your laptop / desktop is far lower than recommended minimum, like mine, have no fear! Now there are some niggles, which can be really minor, if at that, such as in opening FMV scene, where there is music but it stops while the scenes continues (not sure if it was the same case on the Vita, I don't remember playing it awhile back), & a more concerning issue, on some areas, I can't really see much because Adol & other character(s) are taking too much of real estate to the point I am literally blind of what's out there (and I am fairly sure this wasn't case on Vita). It's possible because I have set the display to 800x600. But regardless, if XSEED can optimize that issue, then it would make playing on GPD Pocket infinitely more playable. Having said that starting tomorrow I will be playing it on GS65 with all max settings ;)Ys is one of my favorite series since from Ys 1 & 2 on Turbo CD. Having said that, I believe that this is a no brainier to any Ys fan - new & old. And I would also recommend who likes Action RPGs & heck any RPGs in general.. had alot of fun playing it as i have with all the other Ys games however i do think this is the worst of the Ys games that is on steam, story was not something that intrested me and the ending was just terrible some bosses felt boring and some dumb but some of them were good. still enjoyed playing it and i will give it a 6/10if you like Ys games you should still play this and if you are new to Ys you should try another one.. Great Ys game, and a worthy canonical Ys IV. Highly recommend.. About the game:This is a pure action rpg that was originally developed for the PS Vita. The gameplay is pretty straighforward. You kill monsters to level up and get loot to be able to survive the next area/boss. With each area the monsters change. The bosses are unique and challenging. There's plenty of gear, upgrades and skills to choose from. The story is well-written and the characters are interesting.About the port:XSEED are known for releasing slightly buggy games, but they listen to community feedback and fix the issues very fast. This time as well. No crashes so far after the first patch. The graphical enhancements are good. The controls are insanely well ported. Keyboard + Mouse and all gamepads are supported. You can even choose what type of button images you want the game to display (PS4/360). I have absolutely no complaint here.tl;dr:It's Ys. Just buy it already.. UPDATE: The game has now been patched to fix the sound balance issues. That part of this review can now be ignored. These are my impressions after 3 hours. Port details in the last two paragraphs. Like Ys Seven, I’m experiencing Memories of Celceta for the first time via its PC port. I’ve played the original Ys 4 both on Snes and PC Engine, and I’m delighted by how good of a job Falcom have done reimagining Ys 4 with this game. Ever since Ys Origin Falcom have aimed for a higher caliber of storytelling in the Ys series, with mixed results. I loved the story in Ys Origin, whereas Ys Seven’s story was a pile of garbage. Ys Memories of Celceta has so far been closer to the quality shown in Ys Origin. Characters have genuine charm, the pace is better and the premise as a whole is more intriguing. I don’t know where the story is going, and I’m interested in finding out what it’s going to do. This isn’t a straightforward remake of Ys 4 like how Ys Oath in Felghana was a remake of Ys 3. This is a more ambitious reimagining of the original game. So even though it has the same music, the same characters, and the same setting as Ys 4, it’s like experiencing it for the first time. I’m happy with what Falcom decided to do with this. The party system introduced in Seven is still a bit visually chaotic, and the mechanics aren't as precise as in Ys 6, Fleghana & Origin. But it plays better than Seven, and I'm not far enough into it to judge it fairly on how well the mechanics scale and sustain across the entire game. The PC port is good, but not perfect. The biggest issue is the sound volume balance. The balancing of music, ambiance, and SFX isn’t authentic to the Vita original. More importantly, the system sounds are way too loud, like the camp menu and opening chests, and there is no way to adjust these sounds separately. At first, I wasn’t sure how annoying this would be in the long run, but now after 3 hours I can say with certainty it’s bad enough that you can’t get used to it. By default, the voice acting was also disturbingly loud, but you can adjust it with its own slider. But the system menu sounds will blow your ears out every time you decide to save or manage the inventory, and you can’t adjust it.Apart from the sound mixing, the port is stable and fast. With a Geforce 1070, I’m easily maintaining over 60fps with all the settings maxed out at 4K with 4xMSAA. There are some new effects added to this version, like “HDR”, which in the case of this game is an advanced bloom effect. You can adjust its intensity; I recommend the weak preset for both its settings. The default setting is garish and blows out too much texture detail on characters. If the sound mixing is fixed, this will clearly be the best version of the game. It's already in great shape, as it looks and plays better than the other versions of the game. It's good enough already that I can recommend it as is, even though I'm finding myself grimacing in pain every time I open the menu to save.. Fairly good, would recommend at full price or a light sale.
